Building bridges

The last few weeks we have been rating ourselves on a scale of 1 - 10 in different areas of our lives. The goal is to understand our P.L.A.C.E. in the world. As you begin (or continue) to work on these areas of your life, it is my prayer that you will see small improvements over time that lead to real life change. Making one or two small, seemingly insignificant, changes really can make a difference in your life. This week we are talking about the A, acceptance. Acceptance is another multidimensional topic and we could go very deep here. For the purpose of this discussion though I want to give some ideas that may help you understand the concept as I see it for the P.L.A.C.E. discussion. Acceptance comes in two forms or maybe we can call them flavors because of the ice cream analogy a few weeks ago. There are 2 main parts of acceptance: 1: Accepting relationships (with God, others & self) and all that comes with them, the good and the bad 2: Accepting what “is”, things that happen, the truth of the situation. I’m sure you’ve dealt with accepting the good and bad of at least some relationships. The question around this is: what about all the other relationships? Typically you start with one relationship with someone else, then it’s another person, at some point you have to deal with your relationships with yourself and with God. Have you given ALL of these the appropriate attention? That factors into your “A - Acceptance” score. A good example of the second of these is when I returned home from Denver on March 15th I had to accept the truth that I have probably been exposed to Covid-19 and had to mentally and emotionally accept this truth. Many times acceptance doesn’t happen all at once. For this situation it took me about a week. Part of the acceptance process will involve: Grace to feel what you need to feel Not hiding from whatever the truth is Accepting that you have choices - choices lead to consequences What can you learn from it As you measure yourself on the scale of 1 - 10 how are you doing on acceptance? Which part of this do you need to work on? Pick one thing and write it down. Write down what you want the outcome to be and then decide on one thing you can do to take a step towards making that new choice. There is a new movie out by the people that created “Ragamuffin” called “God’s Fool”. It is a story about the life of St. Francis told through the eyes of what it might look like today. In the movie there was talk about how you don’t have to believe the same thing as others to find value in them and accept them as they are. This is a great example of acceptance. One quote from the movie that was powerful is, “I’m more interested in building bridges than walls”. You can check out how to rent or buy the movie here. Be sure to continue to work on the P and L from to help you continue to find your PLACE in the world. Remember, what you focus on grows. Choose wisely.
